CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Madison hugs her son tightly. “It’s so good to see you!” As she pulls away, she looks him over to check he’s intact. You never know with boys. “Why didn’t you say you were coming?”

He shrugs and heads straight to the refrigerator. “I’ve been trying to get hold of Nate, but he won’t return my calls, so I thought I’d just come. You’re always telling me to visit more.”

Madison joins him in the kitchen. “I have leftover pasta and garlic bread?”

His eyes light up. “Hit me.” He grabs a fork and sits on a stool at the breakfast bar as Madison plates the food. Bandit suddenly appears. He jumps onto the counter and meows loudly at his favorite person. Owen pulls him in for a hug and lets the cat rub its face all over his jaw. “Hey, buddy! Did you miss me?”

Madison’s never heard the cat purr so loudly. He starts making biscuits against Owen’s shirt. “He never does that to me.”

“That’s because you never give him any attention,” says Owen. He fusses over the cat until Bandit’s had enough. Bandit jumps down and disappears through the flap in the door to enjoy the wilderness outside.

With the cat gone, Madison realizes she should address the elephant in the room. “Nate’s gone home to Kansas to see his brother and sister. He accidentally left his phone at home.”

He frowns. “He went without you?”

“I can’t get away because work’s so busy right now.”

He looks around the kitchen diner. “He took Brody with him?”

She slides the bowl across the counter, and he launches his fork straight into the pasta. “No, I need Brody here to help with searches,” she lies.

“So where is he?” His mouth is full as he talks.

“He’s with Vince right now.”

“How come?”

Madison smiles. “He’s searching a crime scene.” Another lie.

“So when’s he coming home?”

She rests her hands on her hips. “Close your mouth while you eat, please. And jeez, what is this, an interrogation? Want me to sit under a bright light in a dimly lit room so you can pressure me for information?”

He laughs. “Are you saying I’d make a good cop?”

“I’m saying eat your food without showing me you’re eating your food. That’s gross.” She uses a sponge to wipe up the mess he’s made from the tomato sauce hitting the counter as he talks. You wouldn’t think he was almost nineteen years old. Or maybe you would. It’s difficult to tell when you only have one child.

He puts his fork down and turns serious. “I guess I may as well come clean and tell you why I really came home.”

A flutter of dread runs through her. “Oh Lord. What have you done?”

He slowly looks her in the eye with a serious expression. “Don’t be mad. But… I got a girl pregnant. And I wanted to tell you in person.”

Madison’s mouth drops. Her son’s going to have a baby? “Say that again?”

“You’re gonna be a grandma,” he says gravely.

She swallows, her mind whirring with questions and flashes of Owen’s new future.
